How KNX connects to SCADA

From KNX devices to SCADA: equipment, connections and ZVENO configuration across three diagram levels.

Diagram levels

KNX devices connect through KNX/IP interfaces or routers. ZVENO publishes selected tags in OPC UA for SCADA.

C1 · Context

KNX devices

Physical devices transmit group telegrams over the KNX bus.

KNX/IP interfaces and routers

Connect ZVENO to the KNX network through a KNXnet/IP tunnel. The gateway creates a separate connection for each active source.

ZVENO

Receives KNX values and publishes selected tags through a single OPC UA server.

SCADA

The OPC UA client reads data and sends commands only for tags with writing enabled.

The ZVENO engineer configures the gateway over HTTPS; remote work uses an agreed customer VPN. The SCADA engineer configures mappings on their side.

C2 · Site connections

KNX/IP sources

Multiple KNX/IP interfaces or routers can connect to the gateway. A separate KNXnet/IP tunnel is created for each active source.

SCADA

Connects to the gateway's single OPC UA server and receives selected tags from all active sources.

For configuration, the engineer connects to the web interface over HTTPS on the site network or through an agreed VPN.

C3 · Configuration and data exchange

Web interface

The engineer adds connections, uploads an ETS project or creates points manually, then checks and applies the settings.

KNX/IP connections

Each active source uses a separate tunnel to a KNX/IP interface or router.

Selected points

The engineer selects points for publication in SCADA and separately enables writing where commands are required.

OPC UA server

A single server publishes selected tags from all active sources and accepts permitted commands from SCADA.

How data and commands flow

Each active KNX/IP source has its own tunnel to the gateway. Through a single OPC UA server, SCADA receives selected values, their quality and timestamps. For commands, writing is enabled separately for each tag.

How the gateway is configured

The engineer works with ZVENO's local HTTPS interface. Remote configuration is possible with agreed access to the site network through the customer's VPN. Settings are saved and checked first, then applied to the gateway.
